mental illness and substance abuse

A diagnosis of a mental illness can be difficult when a person’s behaviour, emotions and cognition are impaired by drug and/or alcohol use.

The term Dual Diagnosis is used when a person is diagnosed with both a mental illness and a substance abuse problem.

Alcohol and other drugs can interfere with the ability of a person to follow a mental health treatment plan. This often leads to poor treatment outcomes, and substance misuse can also mask underlying mental health problems.
